cfp: Artech 2010 “Envisioning Digital Spaces”

Artech 2010 is the fifth international conference held on the topic of Digital Arts. It aims at promoting contacts between Iberian and International contributors concerned with the concept, production and dissemination of Digital and Electronic Art.

Artech 2010 aims at bringing the scientific, technological and artistic community together, while promoting the interest in the digital culture and its intersection with art and technology as an important research field, a common space for discussion and exchange of experiences, a forum for emerging digital artists and a way of understanding and be delighted with new forms of digital expression.

Artech 2010 includes new topics concerning the relation between digital culture, architecture and design. In traditional design processes, architects work with aesthetic, functional, technical, economic and social elements in order to achieve a final structural design proposal. Generative Computational Design processes share these same concerns, despite the fact that innovative digital tools are forcing new approaches for architectural design to emerge. If in the past paradigms, architects have built what they could represent and represented what they could build, in the new emerging paradigms they are less limited in this regard, due to the integration of generative design systems with digital production technologies including, among others, virtual reality and ambient intelligent artifacts.

We invite proposals of papers, demonstrations or short performances, workshops or panel discussions. Only a summary of the proposal on not more than one page is required for the selection process. this must be submitted electronically according to the instructions on the EVA London website, http://www.eva-conferences.com/eva_london/.

Proposals may be on any aspect of EVA London’s focus on visualisation for the arts and culture, broadly interpreted, including technology, use and users, creative, visual and performing arts and music and visualisation for museums, historic sites and architecture. Papers are peer reviewed and may be edited. They will be published as hard copy and online. Other presentations may be published as summaries or as papers.

If your proposal is a case study, we will be looking for discussions of wider principles or applications using the case study as an example.

Fun ‘n’ Games is a single-track, 2-day conference where academics and practitioners can interact together in a playful event that marries the best of academic writing with the most innovative user experiences.

The conference elicits contributions from designers, developers, and researchers in computer games, experience design and fun. We are particularly interested in contributions that cross the traditional disciplines of human computer interaction, games design and game development.

It will provide a venue for presenting and discussing peer reviewed academic and practitioner papers, posters and live demos.

“Digital storytelling” is a strong and emerging genre in the contemporary media landscape, and we invite scholars to publish the results of their academic studies in this area. Joe Lambert of the Center for Digital Storytelling, professor Theo Hug of University of Innsbruck, and professor Knut Lundby, University of Oslo have agreed to act as an advisory board to the editors for this special issue.

The Institute of Design, Illinois Institute of Technology, and the Design & Emotion Society are pleased to invite you to participate in the 7th International Conference on Design & Emotion in Chicago, October 4-7. The International Conference on Design & Emotion is a forum held every other year where practitioners, researchers and industry leaders meet and exchange knowledge and insights concerning the cross-disciplinary field of design and emotion. The conference will offer workshops, research paper presentations, design case presentations, and poster presentations. The conference language is English.

Since this conference was first established in 1999, what many predicted then came to be. Technologies are now able to achieve emotional qualities and design examples using these technologies abound. While we have made significant progress in research and practice relevant to emotional factors in design, many fundamental questions remain unanswered and new issues have been raised as we experience major changes in technological, social, cultural and economic environments. We are at the stage for another leap forward in the development of new understanding and vision of emotional factors in design through our critical reflection, innovative exploration and collaborative endeavor. “Building Connections Between Continents and Communities in a Climate of Change”
The fifth annual NAI international conference will be a place to explore connections:

  • between global, regional, and local communities
  • between professional communities
  • between natural and cultural communities

All of these connections are set against the backdrop of a rapidly changing climate framed by economics, weather, politics, and many other factors. Global climate change can refer to any of those factors, but the interpretive community must be aware of all of them as we strive to communicate the importance of understanding and appreciating our heritage resources.

Join us in Townsville, Queensland to explore the many ways in which changing climates are affecting heritage resources all over the world, from Australia’s Great Barrier Reef to America’s Grand Canyon and everything in between. Your thoughts on using interpretation to promote good management practices, techniques for instilling stewardship ethics, tourism trends that affect heritage resources, or research that supports (or refutes) the value of what we do are all welcome.

We invite you to present your research at the Design Research Society 2010 conference. Contributors are invited to submit long or short papers that deal with different facets of the contemporary approaches to design research, education or practice.

All propositions will be independently peer-reviewed by at least two members of the DRS 2010 review committee.

ABSTRACTS
Proposals of no more than 800 words must initially be submitted for review. They may be in English or in French, should describe the context of the research, questions addressed, hypotheses, how the research has been developed including research methods, findings or conclusions, and be supported by a sufficient number of bibliographic references. Clear indication must be provided whether the proposal is for completed research or work in progress. Images are not requested at this time.

Abstracts will be submitted in the form of an electronic submission directly HERE.

DEADLINE FOR ABSTRACTS: MONDAY OCTOBER 12 2009.

PAPER SUBMISSIONS:
Following peer evaluation, authors of accepted proposals will receive an invitation to submit a full paper, accompanied by reviewers’ remarks and suggestions. Full papers, in either English or French and between 3000 and 5000 words long, should be in the form of original contributions that present completed research (specifically the objectives, issues, hypotheses, conceptual framework and methodology), describe work in progress demonstrating the relevance or the innovative nature of the object of study or develop a theoretical reflection about an issue relevant to design research, education or practice.

Authors of accepted papers will be invited to present their work at the 2010 Design Research Society (DRS) International Conference. They will be allowed 20 minutes for presentation and a further 10 minutes to respond to questions. The conference will be held in English with simultaneous translation of French presentations.

Since DRS 2010 will be held in a French speaking city and university, DRS 2010 will exceptionally welcome contributions in French.

Can complexity be contained?
To speak of “design AND complexity” suggests design can be held outside complexity. From an instrumental perspective, it implies the designer’s task is to overcome or manage complexity. However, from the point of view of enquiry, the binary relation has to be refused and complexity recognised as the inescapable condition of design. To cast complexity pragmatically is to reduce it and thus negate the complex, while to fully embrace it is to create an unbounded exploration leading to chaos and madness. The challenge then is to find an appropriate mode of thinking, practice and a language to engage complexity.

CFP 5D: The Future of Immersive Design

Digital technologies are blurring the boundaries between the passive and interactive experience of visual art, entertainment, environmental design and the built environment. For all those engaged in the creative process of world-building and storytelling in narrative media, 5D: The Immersive Design Conference is the platform for exploring the present and future of immersive design, and its impact on all aspects of the creative media space.

Our goal is to unite a vital community of designers and image-makers and to serve as a catalyst for innovation.

The next cornerstone biennial 5D conference, a co-presentation of the Art Directors Guild and the University Art Museum of CSULB, will be held on the campus of California State University, Long Beach in October 2010.

Between its 2-yearly conferences, inaugurated in October 2008, 5D curates a series of events distributed in time and place, building the 5D community with an expanding network and content driven knowledgebase.

DiGRA and Serious Games

I am off to Denmark 25 August-5 September, as a guest of the research project ‘Serious Games on a Global Market Place’. Simon and the Serious Games Interactive are doing some interesting things with history!

And it looks like I will give an informal talk to CITA at  The Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, School of Architecture, Copenhagen, Thursday 25 September and then over the following weekend drive up to Stockholm. Then there is a side trip to DIGRA in London (September 1-3)  to present a paper “Keeping it Reel-Is Machinima a Form of Art”?, and to be part of a panel to discuss the relationship between film and games.

CFP: Evaluating Virtual Worlds-OZCHi2009

This workshop aims to advance the discussion and debate on the most appropriate evaluation methods for virtual worlds, using a novel method of summarizing and critically reviewing the other attending authors’ papers. We expect that authors will be either virtual world designers who wish to explore and adopt evaluation methods, or HCI practitioners keen to share their evaluation methods and insights. Each author will present their review of two other authors’ papers. Each author will have a chance to respond and debate issues arising from the discussion. We intend to publish either as working papers with an ISSN or ISBN, or via a journal or as an edited book.
